This the moment cruel thugs laughed as they filmed themselves dragging an endangered green sea turtle behind a car down a bumpy road in Costa Rica.

The youths tied the giant animal up by the front flippers after capturing it near the port of Moin in the province of Limon on Costa Rica's central-east Caribbean coast.

After flipping the turtle on to its back, they hauled it along face first through puddles and potholes behind a car, laughing as the frightened animal bumped along on its back.

The car then speeds up considerably, going over various pot holes on the mud track, until finally coming to a standstill.

The boys then hosed down the turtle and untied its fins, seemingly proud of their twisted escapade, before allegedly slicing the animal up while it was still alive.

The video was shared on the Facebook page of animal activist Alvaro Sagot, who said he had received the clip from contacts in the area.  

He said: 'Like me, they were left without words or breath, and disillusioned with life, after seeing the footage.' 

'It is a lack of respect to different forms of life. The way they mistreat the turtle goes against everything that a civilised country should be.'

Sagot said this was only one part of the video and that further footage shows the men cut up and kill the turtle in a very 'cruel' way. 

He said: 'In another part of the video they cut up the poor turtle while it's still alive. The youths don't care, they laugh their heads off, they don't care that you can see their faces; it's shameful.'

The activist assured social media users that this is a chargeable offence and various animal organisations have denounced the acts to the authorities and put pressure on them to identify those involved.

Green turtles are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and it is illegal to collect, harm or kill them and carries a punishment of up to three years in jail.
