Girlfriend 'pours lighter fuel over sleeping boyfriend and sets him on fire'

A man had a lucky escape after his girlfriend doused his tent with lighter fuel and setting it on fire as he slept inside, police said.

The 34-year-old man had been arguing with Jennifer Marie Sharp, 26, at the Swift Creek campground in Bellingham, Washington.

They were bickering about a former lover when Sharp demanded that her boyfriend give her the keys to their car.

He refused because she had been drinking and, growing tired of rowing, he crawled inside his tent to get some rest.

At around 10pm Sharp allegedly doused the canvas in fuel and ignited it at the front entrance, the Bellingham Herald reported.

The boyfriend was able to escape from the tent, which was left badly damaged.

As he emerged he was faced with a barrage of firewood, camp chairs and other items, allegedly hurled by his girlfriend.

Leaving her boyfriend bewildered and his tent in ruins, Sharp smashed the car windscreen and wandered off.

She was picked up by deputies walking towards Highway 20 and booked into the Whatcom County Jail, accused of arson and domestic violence assault.

Her boyfriend was treated for minor injuries including welts, bruises, cuts and scrapes, miraculously avoiding serious burns.

'Fortunately the flame-retardant qualities of the tent kept the whole thing from going up,' Sheriff's Sgt. Larry Flynn told the Herald.

On Sharp's Facebook page she has only photographs of her children.

In the 'About' section of her page the 'GRADS-Teen Parent Programme' graduate posted: 'Life will get better all my dreams will come true and my kids will grow up healthy and happy, now that we are free.'

She grew up in Bellingham, Washington, where her mother,
Laura Sharp Endersby, lives and works for a trucking company.

Sharp now lives in Ferndale, Washington.
